Whanganui Hospital’s Espresso Plus and The Top Café are introducing further healthy food options to its daily menu for staff and visitors. The decision to do so is in response to the Whanganui District Health Board’s (WDHB) recently reviewed Nutrition Policy which states that 70 percent of food sold on WDHB premises must be healthy. Spotless Services regional manager Peter Birch says his company has embraced the opportunity to support employees and visitors to make healthier eating choices and actively promote a healthy eating environment for staff and visitors purchasing food and drinks at one, or both, cafeterias. Mr Birch says café food supplied by Spotless will undergo a number of changes over the coming months. “During the first stage of implementation we have introduced a popular two-weekly, rotating salad menu packed with vegetables, nuts, seeds, and lean protein options,” Mr Birch says. “In addition to salads, most deep fried items have been replaced by stuffed vegetables, wholemeal pizza sticks, and kumara hash cakes. Mr Birch says the move to offer an enhanced range of healthier foods follows the recent removal of most sugar-sweetened beverages from the hospital’s cafes where customers can purchase a variety of sugar free options.
